The Vision Council (TVC) Foundation, AccuWeather, and The Skin Cancer Foundation (TSCF) have announced a new collaboration ahead of National Sunglasses Day on June 27, focused on promoting comprehensive protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
The campaign brings together expertise in eye health, weather forecasting, and skin cancer prevention to encourage the public to adopt a broader approach to sun safety. The organizations are emphasizing the use of UV-blocking sunglasses, sunscreen, protective clothing, and access to UV Index information as part of a daily routine.
According to TVC’s 2025 “Market inSights with 2026 Forecast” report, more than 37% of American adults do not regularly wear sunglasses, increasing exposure to UV-related eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, photokeratitis, and cancers affecting the eye and eyelid.
TSCF noted that skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the United States, with ultraviolet radiation identified as its leading cause. The organization also cited ongoing gaps in sunscreen use and other preventive habits among consumers.
As part of the initiative, each organization will contribute educational resources and outreach efforts. TVC Foundation will continue its National Sunglasses Day public awareness campaign and provide educational materials for eyecare professionals and consumers, TSCF will share guidance on sun protection and early detection strategies, and AccuWeather will provide access to localized UV forecasts and brightness data through its UV Index and AccuLumen Brightness Index tools.
“Protecting yourself from the sun isn't a single habit, but a complete routine. When you walk out the door, you should be reaching for your sunglasses and your sunscreen, and you should know what the UV Index looks like that day,” said Ashley Mills, CEO of TVC and TVC Foundation. “By bringing together 3 organizations that each own a critical piece of that message, we can finally give the public the full picture.”
“AccuWeather’s freely available UV Index provide…enhanced protection from excessive UV exposure by allowing users to track their UV exposure hour-by-hour, down to the tenths of a unit and is already reaching millions of people worldwide,” said Jonathan Porter, senior vice president, weather content and forecast operations and chief meteorologist at AccuWeather. “Our collaboration with The Vision Council Foundation and The Skin Cancer Foundation enables us to turn critical data into meaningful action.”
“In nearly 90% of cases, skin cancer is preventable with a complete sun protection strategy, which includes UV protective sunglasses,” said TSCF President Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD. “We so appreciate this opportunity…to help the public understand that…UV radiation from the sun causes photodamage to your skin, including the delicate skin around your eyes, every day. We proudly stand alongside these organizations to drive this message home on National Sunglasses Day and every day.”
The organizations said they will coordinate digital and social media campaigns leading up to National Sunglasses Day, sharing educational content and UV safety information using the hashtag #NationalSunglassesDay.
TVC Foundation also announced that free 2026 National Sunglasses Day toolkits are available for eyecare providers, optical businesses, and consumers. The materials include social graphics, fact sheets, and customizable campaign resources. OM
