The American Optometric Association (AOA) announced a new partnership with professional baseball player Kiké Hernández (LA Dodgers) as part of its nationwide Eye Deserve More campaign, according to a press release. Specifically, the initiative emphasizes the importance of comprehensive, in-person eye exams with a doctor of optometry.
According to the press release, Hernández says that despite passing standard vision screenings, he struggled at the plate during the first half of a season until an in-person optometry visit revealed astigmatism. After diagnosis and treatment, Hernández points out that his performance improved, and he was able to help his team secure victories. Additionally, Hernández notes that his diagnosis not only enhanced his performance but also reshaped his perspective on maintaining vision health.
Reflecting on his diagnosis, Hernández states that he now encourages teammates and others to prioritize in-person exams. In fact, he shares that a teammate was also diagnosed with astigmatism and received corrective treatment after talking to Hernández.
